Webb as Obama's Veep choice?
James Joyner speculates about the possibility that Barack Obama might choose a fellow first-termer, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), as his running mate. (H/t InstaPundit.) That prospect tickles my funny bone, so I'll republish here (with modifications and additions) a comment I originally left on an Althouse post some time ago:
George Soros' head would instantly explode if Obama picked Jim Webb as his Veep nominee. Are Democratic 527s the main beneficiaries of his estate planning, I wonder?
The thought of Webb and Obama sharing a ticket really makes me giggle. I can envision a joint appearance with Webb getting into gear about the Scots-Irish and their heritage, and how they provided the work ethic which built the United States into the greatest country in the world — all while Michelle Obama silently seethes.
Then Barack Obama would explain that the Second Amendment permits the District of Columbia to ban handguns outright. At that exact moment, Webb would slyly nudge his briefcase, with its Glock and three extra magazines of ammo, further under the table.
Midway through Rev. Wright's closing benediction, I would expect Webb to engage him in a fist-fight.

And after the MSM reported it as a contest to see who hated GWB more, that would hurt them how?

I don't think Webb would cost the Dem ticket a net number of electoral votes, so I'm not contending his nomination for the Veep spot would "hurt" them. I just think it would produce amusing circumstances of the "strange bedfellows" variety.

It would be very amusing, and your Althouse commentary was, too. I'm trying to think of who I'd like McCain to pick to engage Webb in the VP debate. Someone who could really, really push those Scots-Irish buttons, make his face turn beet red, and finally, cause a massive, uncontrollable chain reaction explosion. I have to stop living in a fantasy world, though.

You know, I was seething at the idea of Webb sneaking his way to the VP slot - he's a Democrat Scalawag (he's a good ol' boy GOP ). But Beldar puts in such perspective (the Palestinian Israeli crisis will look like a tea party compare to this would-be odd couple)that I actually look forward to such a pairing.

I can't see either of the candidates picking a sitting senator as running mate, since it will disturb the balance of power there. They'll probably both pick from available state governors.

I propose Sarah Palin as the answer to driver's question about who would be the best GOPer to engage Webb in debate. If Webb pulls out a Glock from his briefcase at the debate, Palin would answer by pulling out the head of a moose she personally bagged from hers. Palin would also send the Dem lefty feminists crazy. What a signt to see the pampered Katha Pollitt faux independent woman crowd criticizing an Annie Oakely-type feminist like Palin.

I don't think that it's as whacky as it seems. Webb is actually in some ways the flip side of the black nationalists, a white guy who thinks that whites (Scots-Irish in particular) have their own claim to fame. It's just the logical conclusion to multiculturalism whereas whites have their own little cultural and ethnic ghetto. We just don't realize its the logical progression because so much of multiculturalism is in practice about denigrating anything that is considered the hegemonic power.

I was just thinking, if Obama gets in there and does the ole Democrat, Viet Nam cut and run, wouldn't that totally eliminate Webb's whole cause to be a Dem? Wouldn't he then convert back to being a Republican (his stances on all the other issues would immediately put him in the middle of the Republican caucas)?
It would be great having Webb casting the deciding votes and telling Barry he can kiss his Scot-Irish a*s as he upholds the 2nd Amendment, keeps taxes down, embraces our military, etc.

Barrack will never name a cracker as his VP!

Don't be fooled by Jim Webb's faux conservatism. Just because he carries a gun doesn't mean he supports you carrying a gun. I live in Virginia so I get to see him up close on a regular basis. He is a Soros lefty to the core.

Nah, Webb would open his pockets and widen his stance for Soros in a heartbeat. Not much to be said for an old marine who supposedly can't keep track of where he leaves loaded weapons laying around...

I'm sure Obama won't mind when Webb hangs a Confederate flag from the porch of Number One Observatory Circle, sets a bust of Robert E. Lee on his desk, and sticks a poster on his office wall with the unofficial Marine Corps motto:
"Give me your hearts and minds...or I'll burn your goddamn huts down."
Hey, it'll be all for the sake of "unity," y'know.

The thing I think would be funny is that I'd lay even money on Webb being fool enough in a VP debate against somebody like Romney or Sanford to play the "I served and you didn't, so shaddup" card, while completely forgetting who the guys at the top of the ticket are.
